The Way

I was visiting Diary of a Square-Toothed Girl just now and Lisa was asking for suggestions for summer tuneage and I was reminded of one of my favourite summer songs.

The Way is a weirdly addictive one-hit wonder by an obscure band called Fastball that speaks of people leaving their homes and kids behind in a quest for "eternal summer slacking."

Part retro drive-in dandy, part Rocky Horror, the tune has a chorus that makes me want to put the pedal to the medal on the open road, leaving all my worries in a cloud of raucous dust. I probably would not leave my kids behind ... probably... depends on how they were getting along as the key to freedom slid into the ignition.

Here. Have some summer weirdness, and enjoy the ride.

  1. I thought I had never heard of this song or this band...until I hit play and then it all came back to me. Your description of it is perfect. :)

    1. Madeline, that's exactly how I felt about this song about seven years ago. My husband and I had just broke up and I went to see a local band at a local coffee/juke joint and the lead singer introduced this song by saying how baaaaaad it was. He was mid-40s or older at the time, black hair and a pointy black beard, tall and broad in the shoulders with a deep voice and lead vocalist swagger, and I admit I swooned a little bit when he was talking about how evil this song was. I had no idea what he was leading into but when he started singing I was, like, "I KNOW this song!" After the concert I tracked it down on Limewire and played it over and over and over in the years to come. It was a metaphor for my life, in many ways, packing up and never coming back.

  3. I'm another Fastball lover. Not sure what happened to this band. I have the CD this one is on though and there are some other good ones on it. Great pick Cathy, any room in that convertible?

  6. LOOOOVE this song! Our youngest daughter turned me on to FASTBALL and made me a tape with this song as the first track. That's so I can rewind as soon as it's done and listen to it over and over and over. It's SO Boomer. Like, "I gave up being irresponsible for THIS? Imma go back!"

  7. Like that! I'm always on the look-out for new music, except I have the idea I've heard it before.

  8. I must have been listening to the wrong music at the important time. It doesn't sound like Mozart or Beetoven.

    Sigh!

  9. I always find classic rock works well for summer nuttiness. I admit, that song has a catchy backbeat.
