Big Bad Handsome Men

I Do Countdown: Three Days!
I adore this photo. Angus looks so grown up. Sam looks so unsure, still a little boy,
wary of this smiling, strange but pretty young woman who is measuring him in strange places
and doing up his buttons. Tonight we took the boys into Tigg's in Bracebridge
for their tuxedo fittings. We had let them pick out their own suits from the catalogues
and we ordered them on June 25, when they were measured from head to toe.
A few months later, and my, how they've grown. Angus needs pants almost two inches longer.

And instead of the biggest boy's size, he will be getting the smallest man's size. Sam's JUST fits.
Seeing my boys in such manly attire brought a tear to my eye and made the wedding day oh so real.

Sam was SO uncomfortable with the fitting.
But I guess when you're 10 there are
better things you could be doing.
Anything, really.
Maybe even homework.

Angus didn't look so thrilled either, although Dave said he'd give anything
to have two pretty girls fussing over him at the same time!

This is Sam's patented "I am being tortured" look.

Now there's a smile!

I dedicate this Imelda May song to my Big, Bad Handsome Men:

The man is tall, mad, mean, and good-lookin'
And he's got me his eye
When he looks at me, I go weak at the knees
He's got me going like no other guy

Chorus
Cause he's my big, bad, handsome man
He's got me in the palm of his hand
He's the Devil Divine, I'm so glad that he's mine
Cause he's my big, bad, handsome man

Oh, the music he plays, the way he moves me and sways
Rocks me to the core
When he sings in my ear, he makes me shiver and leer
Leaves me wanting more and more

Cause he's my big, bad, handsome man
He's got me in the palm of his hand
He's the Devil Divine, I'm so glad that he's mine
'Cause he's my big, bad, handsome man

With his rugged good looks yeah he’s got me hooked
Got me where he wants me to be
With his arms so wide, he pulls me in by his side
He’s the kind of guy that does it for me

Chorus
Cause he’s my big bad handsome man yeah
He’s got me in the palm of his hand
He’s the devil divine, I’m so glad that he’s mine
Cause he’s my big bad handsome man
Ouuuw
My big bad handsome man, yea
He’s got me in the palm of his hand
He’s the devil divine, I’m so glad that he’s mine
Cause he’s my big bad
I’m so glad that he’s my handsome man
Hhmmmm

Pomp Pomps

I Do Countdown: Four Days. FOUR DAYS!

It was a dark and stormy night.
Dave was making pomp-pomps. I was hyperventilating and trying to take pictures of him.
Apparently fluffing pomp-pomps is not manly and he didn't want no pictures taken of his manly self with pomp-pomps. (Damnnit! I keep putting in extra pees.)
"Not a chance, chicky-poo," he said, threatening to throw one at me.
I took one anyway and then ran. Ran as fast as I could whilst hyperventilating in a pink nightgown and giggling madly.
He did toss one at me and, like Elvis Costello, his aim is true.

So.
The wedding is four days away. I'm remarkably calm now. All is done. (Except the pomp-pomps. There are about a million of them. Who the heck ordered so many? Me? Whatever.)
Well, all is almost done.
This is what's left:
Wednesday
1. Work, or pretend to work while looking at bride websites. Luckily my bosses generally don't read my blog, although I have tried to get them to because I want them to see how talented and wonderful I am but I guess they're too busy.. washing their hair or something...
2. Hairdressers, 3 p.m., so Jeanette can touch up my roots. I have roots that run deep. They could make a mini-series on my roots.
3. Meet my mom and the boys at 5 p.m. at our house so we can take boys for tuxedo fittings. Angus and Sam have both grown like, about three inches each since the original fitting. I'm sure they will have to resend pants.
4. Go grocery shopping. I want to have yummy treats on hand Friday night; also, must continue to eat as much as possible because there is still hope I might not fit into my dress.
5. Pick up girdle underpants at Sears Order Store. (See #4)
6. Enlist boys to help fluff pomp-pomps.
7. Sleep fitfully.

Thursday
1. Chiropractor's appointment at 8 a.m. to fix my wounded shoulder (I smashed it last spring and it's been bugging me ever since).
2. Work, or pretend to work while looking at Newfoundland websites.
3. Go shopping again because sure as heck I'll have forgotten something Wednesday night.
4. Dave has a chiropractor's appointment because he needs a crunching.
5. Write a #fridayflash  because I don't want to destroy my reputation as a #ff addict. (The doughnuts and coffee are so good at those meetings! Even though Linda at Leftbrainwrite always steals the Boston Creams, Alan takes all the Dazed (er, I mean Glazed), Carrie Clevenger takes the jam-filled ones because they remind her of blood and Michael Solender takes all the rest for his new food writer's page on fictionaut.) I have no idea what to write about. I. Mean. No. Idea. But that's two whole days away... why sweat the small stuff?
6. Sleep fitfullly.

Friday
1. Wake up early to see if anybody read my flash. (It's like Christmas morning, isn't it?)
2. Dave has a dentist appointment at 8:30 a.m. to get his pearly whites cleaned.
3. I have a massage booked for 1 p.m. with the lovely and very talented Carol McVittie who has been working on my shoulder for weeks and who gives the BEST massages. Ever.
4. Dave has a touch-up hair appointment at 1 p.m. with Jeanette, who will further rescue Dave from the skunk stripe I inflicted on him two weeks ago. Did I not mention that? Huh... I wonder why...
5. Our guests start arriving!
6. Decorate cars. Pack. Panic.
7. Wedding rehearsal 5 p.m.
8. Dinner at Swiss Chalet 6 p.m. (where else but Chalet Suisse?)
9. Finishing touches on reception decorations 8:15 p.m.
10. Relax at home with good friends, tasty treats and possibly a spirit or two.
11. Take Gravol or have Dave hit me over the head with a two-by-four.
12. Sleep fitfully.

Saturday
1. Wake up early to see if anybody read my flash.
Kidding.
Maybe.
Dave says he's hiding the laptop. We'll see about that pomp-pomp boy - howdja like to see that picture of you with your pomps pinned up with the half-nekkid ladies at the shop?
Wonder what the other auto techs would say about that, hmmmm?

For Dave - #fridayflash

I love this photo of Dave. He's always so happy when he's fishing.

How do I know he’s the one?
He clatters the dishes out in the kitchen while I lay on the bed, outstretched, playing with my hair. It is luxuriously soft, silken in my fingers. I have just come back from the hairdresser’s and it is blown smooth, blown shiny, infused with chocolate caramel streaks, subtle, rich, delicious.
I am here to write, ostensibly.
But the electric fireplace is on, chasing mid-September chill, and the sheets are warm and I yawn and stretch and play with my hair and listen to him doing the dishes.
I am sleepy. My belly is stretched and full. He cooked supper while I was getting my hair done. Hamburger Helper with add-ons: chopped red onion, Montreal steak spice, fresh ground pepper. When I got home he came to the door and smiled at me, kissed me soundly then pulled me into the kitchen where he could see my hair better. His eyes lit up.
“It looks great,” he said, and he pulled me close and stroked my hair and told me he was glad to see me and asked, how was my day?
I threw a salad together, because Hamburger Helper deserves crunchy iceberg lettuce slivered fine, diced carrots and onions, grated cheddar, dried cranberries, sunflower seeds and lemon poppyseed dressing.
We ate ravenously in front of the TV, watching Stargate because he loves science fiction and I love him and every once in a while he lets me watch chick flicks, even the tear-jerkers, and when we do, he cries harder than me.
When we’re done I carry the dishes over to the sink and he says, “Don’t you have a #fridayflash to write?”
So I come in here and I shut the door behind me and I turn on the computer and I start to write. But all I can hear are the rattling of the dishes; the muffled, muted rattling of dishes because he is trying not to disturb me. I listen. I feel peace soaking into my bones.
How do I know he’s the one?
How could I not know?

Shook Up Like A Bag Of Chips

I Do Countdown: 10 Days
Today the alarm went off at 5 a.m. when I didn't have to get up until 8 and the first thing I did was step on a cat poo truffle.
This is a sign from God that I shouldn't leave the house. Cause yesterday the alarm went off at 5 and the first thing I did was clean up dog piddle. And I really shouldn't have left the house. But nobody told me it was a Sign. They should have, but I don't think there is anybody delegated to tell you what the Signs are. You're given a Sign - it's up to you to interpret the Sign. I guess the powers-that-be figure we don't need somebody to say, "YO, STUPID - THAT THERE'S A SIGN." But they're wrong, because we do.
I am all shook up like a bag of chips.
My parents used to say that to me when I was all wound up, which was a lot, looking back - poor them. These days I'm less hyperactive and more like a big slug - sometimes I wish someone would poke me with a stick just to see if I'm breathing.
But not these days. I'm breathing all right. Hyperventilating, more like. My heart's thumping outta my chest, my skin's clammy and I feel nauseous about 99% of the time, which doesn't prevent me from stuffing my gob like someone stuffs a turkey. Stress eating? Oh yah - I am worried about fitting into my wedding dress. I guess I should have got the elastacene version with the spandex lace inserts and the girdle middle.
Ya see? There's another Sign right there. I came home from work the other night and flipped on the tube and there was Dr. Oz talking about obesity. I frikkin' hate shows about obesity when I'm going through a Fat Stage. When I'm dieting, I could watch Fat Shows all day. They're inspiring. When I'm Fat Staging, they are a guilty reminder and you just want to shut them the hell up. I hate Dr. Oz. I do. I hate him. I don't get why he's so popular. I don't like Dr. Phil, either. And Oprah's just started her last season. I still like Oprah, and I'll miss her. But her two weird doctorish offspring can calve anytime, as far as I'm concerned.
I'm digressing. (It's called Stress Writing, much like Stress Eating only not as tasty.)
Excuse me while I yell at the cat. He's humping Aunt Edna's blanket again. I don't know why he loves to hump Aunt Edna's hand crocheted blanket but the filthy creature is in love with it - GET OFF THE BLANKET, BEN, YOU TWISTED WEIRDO.
I'm digressing again. I want to tell you about yesterday.
At work, I could barely concentrate. I've been having trouble falling asleep at night lately and at work yesterday it was all I could to to keep my eyes open. Toothpicks helped but the pointy ends kept poking holes in my eyelids. Time moved exquisitely slow. Like in school, when you're bored out of your ever loving skull and the clock moves in slow motion. Tick ..... tick .... tick .... and drool puddles out of the corner of your mouth and your head is bobbing and weaving ... tick ....
When it was finally time to leave, with emphasis on Finally, I decided to go into town (my office is on the outskirts) and pick up a couple of chick flicks, some dish soap and a bag of McDonald's. Dave was away overnight for a course in Toronto and I figured I would curl up on the couch with some romantic wedding comedy and a Big Mac.
So I went to the video store and picked out Bride Wars and Letters to Juliet, or something, and then paid. Uneventfully. I had enough points to get one movie for free so I only had to fork over five bucks cash for the other one. Fine. (And since I only ended up watching one movie I don't feel like I wasted anything.)
Then I went over to the grocery store because I needed some dish soap, laundry detergent and light bulbs. I pulled out my debit card for that one and Guess What! The transaction was Not Approved. My face heated up like an Arizona sunrise. But I was cool. "Oops," I said. And forked out the sixteen bucks from the loonies and toonies I had in my wallet.
I HATE IT WHEN THAT HAPPENS.
Actually it hasn't happened to me for a long, long time. But I've been spending money like a drunken sailor on wedding crap so what's surprising isn't that I finally ran out of coin, it's that I didn't run out sooner.
While I played it cool at the check-out counter, inside I was a gelatinous mess. My legs were shaking so bad I could hardly walk out to the parking lot.
"Settle down," I said to myself. "Breathe."
My hands shook as I started the Jeep.
I know what I'm like when I get like this. If I was with Dave, I'd let him drive because it's just safer that way. But Dave wasn't there. So I actually consciously told myself to Be Careful backing up, to look all ways, to do it slow.
Still, I just missed backing into somebody's pick-up truck by inches. INCHES. Maybe even less than that. The "what would have happened if I had of hit it" ran through my head as my heart pounded in my chest.
I drove away, slowly. When I got to the highway I set the cruise control because I didn't trust myself to keep to the speed limit. I just wanted to get home, in one piece.
Yesterday I had a friend wonder if I was mad at her. NO! I'm just a big, weirded out ball 'o stress. I yell at my kids. I cry without warning or reason. I snap at Dave.
So last night, when I got home safe and sound, I made a few phone calls. I called my friend and told her I'm not mad at her. I called my kids and told them I'm not mad at them. I called Dave and told him how much I missed him. I watched Bride Wars. I folded some laundry. I ate some chips - because sometimes it's better to eat chips than to be shook up like a bag of them.
As for today's Sign, the kitty litter encrusted turd that I stepped on (our dog pulls them out of the litter box and kindly deposits them around the house) and the raging alarm clock, I vow to heed the warning. Or at least try.
With only 10 days to go, it's getting harder and harder to do.

Fear & Loathing in Magnetawan

Today I started following an interesting blog.
"Dick Smith for Mayor ... NOT!" is as bizarre a website as I've ever seen, and I've seen plenty. Not bizarre as in girls in bikinis and wild monkeys, but bizarre in terms of its complete and utter political incorrectness.
How many times have you wished politicians would just stop talking in riddles and say what's on their minds?
Well, the owner of this blog, Tony Pratas, does just that.
You should read some of the stuff on this blog - it's stuff I don't even want to repeat for fear of getting sued. I would be surprised if there wasn't already a lawsuit in the works - the content is that incendiary.
Still, I really, really want to.
It's kind of, um, funny.
No, no - to be honest, it's just about the funniest thing on the internet. You should go look at it now before some lawyer shuts it down.
This is what it's about: Mr. Pratas is currently a Councillor for the Municipality of Magnetawan. Dick Smith is currently the Mayor of Magnetawan. Mr. Pratas wants Mr. Smith's job and he's going after it like killer bees after stolen honey.
Mr. Smith's tenure as Mayor has been fraught with controversy; so much so that many people were surprised when he announced he'd be running again.
Magnetawan, it should be noted, is such a small town that I don't think it even qualifies as a small town. It's more of a village, a tiny, scenic crossroads on the banks of the Magnetawan River. It boasts a fine restaurant where I've enjoyed many a tasty meal (they put mustard smiley faces on their hamburgers) some pretty scenery; and some of the most blood-spattered, eye-gouging, gut-punching politicking this side of Buffalo. I mean you see this kind of thing on American TV commercials all the time, but you generally never see it in our neck of the woods. Especially not in tiny wee towns like Magnetawan.
OK, so maybe it goes on in the backrooms and the bedrooms. But certainly not online.
The author of the blog has another blog, aptly called Tony Pratas for Mayor. It's a little bit prettier than the Smith blog, but certainly not as funny. It lacks that rednecked zeal that the Smith one has.
By the way, I've got seven famous fictional mayors on this page - see if you can tell me who they all are -WITHOUT CHEATING!
We're running an honest campaign here; besides, you know what happens to cheaters...
